Change Oil

How Often to Change Motorcycle Oil

As a full-service motorcycle dealer in Denver, one of the most common questions we're asked is, "How often should I change motorcycle oil?" You should always consult your owner's manual for answers to service-related questions, but generally, it's a good idea to perform an oil change every 2,000 miles or up to 5,000 miles if your bike uses synthetic oil. What about the oil filter? The oil filter doesn't need to be replaced with every oil change. If you're using your bike to cruise around Thornton, you can probably get away with changing it during every other oil change.

Why is a Motorcycle Oil Change Important?

When it comes to engine oil, motorcycles and automobiles have a lot in common. Both need oil to keep their engines running optimally and safely. Oil lubricates the engine's moving parts and keeps the internal components clean. Every time you fire up your bike, the oil moves through the engine and grabs dirt and debris while also regulating temperatures. Oil also absorbs the heat inside the combustion chamber, lowering the motor's internal temperature and preventing overheating.

Signs Your Bike Needs Oil Service

Motor oil is crucial to your bike's performance, so it's usually easy to tell when it's time for fresh oil and an oil filter. If you notice any of the following, schedule an oil change at Erico Motorsports as soon as possible:

  • The engine is much louder than normal.
  • Warning lights on the dash won't disappear.
  • You can't recall the last time you scheduled a motorcycle engine oil change.

What Happens if You Skip Oil Changes?

Skipping an oil change means bad news for your bike's engine. Commonly, the engine's parts will begin to overheat, causing a drop in fuel-efficiency. Over time, the parts will develop wear and tear due to a lack of lubrication. If fresh oil isn't added, the engine will eventually shut down and become inoperable. Engine replacements are highly expensive repairs and cost thousands of dollars, which is why many bikers in this situation choose to scrap their bikes and buy new ones. On the other hand, oil changes are cheap and are only needed about twice a year, so there's no good reason to skip them.
